June 7, July 5: First Friday
Enjoy visual arts, musical presentations, sample local foods, get acquainted with local performing artists and more at this monthly event sponsored by the Downtown Spokane Partnership. On the first Friday of each month, participating galleries, museums, boutiques and more host a city-wide open house with refreshments and entertainment. First Friday is free and open to the public. June 29-30: Hoopfest
Spokane Hoopfest is the largest 3-on-3 outdoor basketball tournament on Earth. That means over 6,000 teams, 3,000 volunteers, 225,000 fans and 450 courts spanning 45 city blocks! June 2, June 17, July 7, July 15: Spokane Poetry Slam and BootSlam
Spokane Poetry Slam is competitive performance poetry at its Northwest finest. Every first and third week of the month spoken word warriors battle for Inland Empire supremacy, and a $50 Grand Prize. Each poem is judged by five members of the audience and, after two rounds of poetry, whichever poet has the highest cumulative score is declared the winner. Bootslam, at Boots Bakery, is held on the first Sunday of each month, while Spokane Poetry Slam, held at the Bartlett, is held on the third Monday of each month. Boots Bakery and Lounge, 24 W. Over a decade in the making, Cory Trépanier’s Into the Arctic exhibition tour presents the most ambitious body of artwork ever created from the Canadian Arctic, a wilderness so remote and untouched, that many of its landscapes have never been documented before. Adding to his majestic paintings are a series of three Arctic films, which cinematically convey the wonder, awe, and challenges of his northern painting expeditions. The artists in Povungnituk, located in Arctic Quebec, have been recognized for over a quarter of a century for the quality of their printmaking and their distinctive style. The Povungnituk sculptures and prints chronicle the history and legends of a people. Characterized by crisp images of native animals and human figures set against stark backgrounds, many of the artworks reveal the rituals that have allowed the Inuit people to survive. In partnership with the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, the MAC presents an exhibition featuring works by eighteen internationally renowned studio glass artists including Dale Chihuly, Preston Singletary, and Lino Tagliapietra. Opening July 2019: Giants, Dragons, & Unicorns: The World of Mythic Creatures
The world is full of stories about brave heroes, magical events and fantastic beings. Tales of mythic creatures have been with us for thousands of years, sometimes inspired by living animals or even fossils. Some of these creatures symbolize danger—others promise to bring luck or joy. Together mythic creatures give shape to humankind’s greatest hopes, fears and most passionate dreams. This traveling exhibition from New York’s American Museum of Natural History combines unique cultural objects, dramatic models, engaging multimedia, and interactive games to tell the origin stories behind the legends of mythical creatures from around the world. June 7: John Ford Coley and Friends
Famous as part of the Grammy® nominated duo with England Dan, John Ford Coley reached multi-gold and platinum status with several hit albums and singles. Their debut album in 1976, “Nights Are Forever,” shot the duo to stardom with the hit singles “I’d Really Love To See You Tonight” and “Nights Are Forever Without You.” In addition to a regular touring schedule performing his own hits, Coley is also known for producing songs for other artists, including Eddie Money, Tom Wurth, Vince Gill and Lynn Bryant. June 18: Indigo Girls
The Indigo Girls are returning to Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox to create their signature harmonies and dynamic soundscapes. Twenty years after they began releasing records as the Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have politely declined the opportunity to slow down with age. With a legacy of releases and countless U.S. and international tours behind them, the Indigo Girls have forged their own way in the music business. July 9: Khalid: Free Spirit World Tour
Multi-platinum global superstar Khalid has announced his North American headline dates for “Khalid Free Spirit World Tour” which includes a stop at the Spokane Arena. Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”) inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor, and a leggy lab assistant, Inga, Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. “It’s alive” he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. June 21-30: Always… Patsy Cline – Revival
Always…Patsy Cline is based on the true story of Patsy Cline’s friendship with Houston housewife Louise Seger. The relationship, which began as fan worship evolved into one of mutual respect. It is the kind of relationship that many fans would like to have with their heroes. Over a pot of strong coffee, the two women chatted about their common concerns. When Cline finally left for Dallas, her next job, the two women had exchanged addresses and telephone numbers. Seger never expected to hear from Cline again, but soon after she left, Seger received the first of many letters and phone calls from Cline. Set along the Mississippi River, Tom Sawyer tells the coming-of-age story of the community’s most mischievous boy. Tom fights a bully, gets his friends to help him whitewash a fence, falls in love with Becky Thatcher, loses her to Alfred Temple, puts together a pirate gang with Huck Finn and the other town boys, runs away from home and comes back to witness his own funeral, wins a Bible scripture contest, and witnesses a murder. Tom initially recoils from telling the truth about Injun Joe’s framing of drunk Muff Potter for the murder but ultimately steps forward to “do the right thing” and saves Muff’s life in the final courtroom scene.
